You bought a new soundbar. The instructions say to connect it to your TV's "HDMI ARC" port. You plug everything in but the audio isn't working, or it's working but you're not getting Dolby Atmos. What's going on?

Welcome to the world of HDMI ARC and eARC — features that let HDMI cables send audio backward from your TV to your audio system, simplifying home theater setups. Here's how they work and what cables you actually need.

What is HDMI ARC?

HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) is a feature introduced with HDMI 1.4 in 2009. Normally, HDMI cables carry audio and video from a source (Blu-ray player, streaming box, game console) TO a display. ARC reverses this for the audio portion — it lets your TV send audio BACK through the same HDMI cable to a soundbar, AV receiver, or audio system.

This is incredibly useful because it eliminates the need for a separate audio cable (like optical TOSLINK or RCA) between your TV and audio equipment. One HDMI cable carries:

  • Video to the TV

  • Control signals (HDMI-CEC for remote control synchronization)

  • Audio BACK from the TV to the soundbar/receiver

Why this matters

Before ARC, connecting a TV to a soundbar was awkward. You had two main options:

Option 1: Connect all sources to the soundbar/receiver, then send video from the receiver to the TV via HDMI. The TV is just a display.

Option 2: Connect all sources directly to the TV, then use a separate optical cable from TV → soundbar for audio.

Both worked, but each had limitations. Option 1 required your receiver to support every video format your TV could display. Option 2 meant the optical cable couldn't carry surround sound formats above Dolby Digital 5.1 — no Dolby Atmos, no DTS:X.

With smart TVs running their own apps (Netflix, Disney+, YouTube), more people want to connect sources directly to the TV. ARC solves this by letting the TV pass its audio (from its built-in apps OR from any connected source) back to the soundbar over the same HDMI cable.

What is eARC?

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the upgraded version of ARC introduced with HDMI 2.1 in 2017. It addresses every major limitation of the original ARC.

If you want lossless Dolby Atmos (the same quality as a 4K Blu-ray) from your TV apps or connected devices, you need eARC. If you only care about compressed Atmos (which still sounds great) or basic 5.1 surround, ARC is fine.

What you need for ARC

For basic ARC to work:

  1. TV with an HDMI port labeled "ARC" — usually only one of the HDMI ports supports ARC, marked with text or a small symbol

  2. Soundbar or AV receiver with an HDMI port labeled "ARC" — same labeling

  3. High Speed HDMI cable — any quality HDMI cable from 2010 onward supports ARC. The connection only uses one extra pin (Pin 14) compared to standard HDMI.

  4. HDMI-CEC enabled on both devices — usually called "Anynet+" (Samsung), "Bravia Sync" (Sony), "VIERA Link" (Panasonic), "SimpLink" (LG)

That's it. Connect TV's ARC port to soundbar's ARC port with an HDMI cable, enable CEC, and audio should automatically route from TV to soundbar.

What you need for eARC

For eARC to work, every part of the chain must support it:

  1. TV with HDMI 2.1 eARC port — most TVs from 2019 onward have this

  2. Soundbar or AV receiver with eARC support — must be specifically advertised

  3. Premium High Speed HDMI cable or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable — eARC needs more bandwidth than ARC, so cable quality matters more

About the cable for eARC: Technically, the HDMI 2.1 specification says you need an "Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable" for guaranteed eARC operation. In practice, most "Premium High Speed HDMI Cables" (rated for 4K @ 60Hz) work fine for eARC since the audio bandwidth (37 Mbps) is much lower than video. But for absolute reliability, especially for lossless Atmos, Ultra High Speed HDMI is the safest choice.

Common ARC/eARC setups

Setup 1: Single soundbar with smart TV apps

You have a smart TV running Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, etc. All your apps are on the TV. Your only external audio is a soundbar.

Connection: TV's ARC/eARC port → soundbar's ARC/eARC port via HDMI cable.

Audio from TV apps and any HDMI sources routed through the TV all play through the soundbar.

Setup 2: Multiple HDMI sources + soundbar

You have a smart TV, Apple TV 4K, gaming console, and a soundbar.

Option A (preferred): Connect everything (Apple TV, gaming console) to the soundbar's HDMI inputs. Soundbar HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) → TV. The soundbar handles audio for everything, video passes through to the TV.

Option B: Connect everything to the TV. TV's ARC/eARC port → soundbar. The TV handles input switching; audio comes back through ARC/eARC.

Option A is generally more reliable because the soundbar doesn't depend on the TV correctly passing through audio formats.

Setup 3: Full AV receiver setup

You have a full AV receiver with speakers, plus a TV with built-in apps.

Connection: External sources → AV receiver inputs → AV receiver HDMI OUT → TV (ARC/eARC). TV's built-in app audio routes back through ARC/eARC to the receiver.

This setup gets you the best of both worlds: external sources get full receiver processing, AND TV-app audio still goes through your audio system.

Troubleshooting ARC/eARC issues

Problem: No audio after connecting ARC

Most common fixes:

  1. Enable HDMI-CEC on both TV and soundbar (called different things by different manufacturers)

  2. Verify cable is connected to ARC-labeled port on BOTH ends (not just one)

  3. In TV settings, manually select the audio output to "ARC" or "HDMI"

  4. Try power-cycling both devices (unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in)

Problem: ARC works but no Dolby Atmos

Possible causes:

  1. Connection is using ARC (not eARC) — limited bandwidth can't carry lossless Atmos

  2. TV app doesn't support Atmos passthrough — check the streaming service settings

  3. TV's audio output setting is "PCM" instead of "Bitstream" or "Pass-through"

  4. Source content isn't actually Atmos (check the streaming app or disc)

Problem: Audio cutting out or popping

Possible causes:

  1. HDMI cable is borderline — try a higher-quality cable

  2. HDMI-CEC conflict between multiple devices

  3. TV firmware bug — check for updates

  4. Try a different HDMI port (some ports work better than others on the same TV)

Problem: Lip sync delay

For ARC, lip sync correction was optional and often poorly implemented. For eARC, lip sync correction is required by the spec.

If you have ARC and experience lip sync issues, look for "Audio Delay" or "Lip Sync" settings in your TV or soundbar to adjust manually. If you have eARC and experience lip sync issues, both devices should auto-correct — if they're not, check for firmware updates.

Buying the right cable

For ARC only (compressed audio, basic 5.1): Any High Speed HDMI cable works. Don't overspend.

For eARC (lossless audio, Atmos): Premium High Speed HDMI cable minimum. Ultra High Speed HDMI for absolute reliability.

For long runs (over 25 feet) to a wall-mounted soundbar or in-wall installation: Active Optical HDMI cable that supports eARC pass-through. Verify with the manufacturer that the active cable supports the bidirectional eARC signal.
