Look at the back of a modern laptop and you'll see USB-C ports. But which ones support Thunderbolt? Which ones are USB4? And does it actually matter? In 2026, the lines between Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 have blurred — but they're still not identical, and choosing the wrong cable can leave performance on the table.

Here's what actually distinguishes Thunderbolt 4 from USB4, why some "USB4" devices are really Thunderbolt under the hood, and how to pick the right cable.

They both use USB-C connectors

The first source of confusion: Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and USB 3.x all use the same physical USB-C connector. You cannot tell what protocol a port supports just by looking at it.

Manufacturers usually mark Thunderbolt-capable ports with a small lightning bolt icon next to the connector. USB4 ports might have a "4" or USB SuperSpeed marking. But marking standards vary by manufacturer, and many ports have no markings at all.

This is why the cable you use and the device you plug in both have to support the protocols you want to use. The connector is just the physical interface.

The shared foundation

Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 are actually built on the same underlying technology. Intel donated the Thunderbolt 3 specification to the USB Implementers Forum, which became the basis for USB4. So at a fundamental level, they speak the same language.

Both Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 share these capabilities:

So why are there two names? Because USB4 is a more flexible, more permissive standard, while Thunderbolt 4 is a stricter certification with guaranteed minimum specs.

Where they differ

Minimum bandwidth requirement:

  • Thunderbolt 4: Always 40 Gbps. Period.

  • USB4: Can be 20 Gbps OR 40 Gbps. Many "USB4" devices and cables only support 20 Gbps. USB4 v2 added 80 Gbps for the latest hardware.

Minimum monitor support:

  • Thunderbolt 4: Must support either two 4K displays or one 8K display.

  • USB4: Must support at least one display. Multi-monitor support is optional.

Minimum data:

  • Thunderbolt 4: Must support PCIe at 32 Gbps (high-speed external SSDs at full speed).

  • USB4: PCIe support is optional. Many USB4 devices don't support external PCIe storage at full speed.

Daisy-chaining:

  • Thunderbolt 4: Required to support daisy-chaining up to 6 devices.

  • USB4: Daisy-chaining is optional and rarely supported.

Cable certification:

  • Thunderbolt 4 cables: All Thunderbolt 4 cables are certified to support 40 Gbps at any length up to 2 meters (passive) or longer with active cabling.

  • USB4 cables: Vary widely. Some only support 20 Gbps. Length limits depend on the cable's individual certification.

Hub support:

  • Thunderbolt 4: Must support Thunderbolt 4 hubs that can connect multiple devices and pass through full bandwidth.

  • USB4: Hub functionality is optional.

What this means in practice

Thunderbolt 4 is essentially a guaranteed performance certification. Every Thunderbolt 4 device, port, and cable supports the full feature set. If you buy a Thunderbolt 4 dock, you know it will run two 4K monitors, charge your laptop, and provide fast external storage — all simultaneously.

USB4 is a "feature menu." A device or port can support some features but not others. A USB4 docking station might only do 20 Gbps and a single monitor. A USB4 cable might only support 20 Gbps. You have to read the spec sheet carefully.

This is why high-end laptops (Dell XPS, MacBook Pro, ThinkPad X1) usually have Thunderbolt 4 ports — buyers expect guaranteed performance. Lower-end laptops and tablets often have USB4, which is cheaper to implement but more variable in capability.

Backward compatibility

Both Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 are backward compatible with:

  • Thunderbolt 3 — Same protocol, slightly older

  • USB 3.2 Gen 2/2x2 — At their respective speeds

  • USB 3.0/3.1 — At their respective speeds

  • USB 2.0 — At 480 Mbps

  • DisplayPort — Through Alt Mode

Which cable should you buy?

For phones and tablets: Standard USB-C cable, USB 3.0 or higher data rate. Thunderbolt is overkill.

For external SSDs: USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) handles most consumer SSDs. For top-tier NVMe SSDs in external enclosures, Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 40 Gbps.

For 4K monitors: USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. Make sure the cable supports DisplayPort Alt Mode at sufficient bandwidth (most do).

For docking stations: Thunderbolt 4 cable to a Thunderbolt 4 dock guarantees the dock works at full capability. USB4 docks vary.

For laptop charging: Any USB-C cable with sufficient wattage rating (60W, 100W, or 240W). Thunderbolt isn't required for charging.

For gaming laptops with eGPU: Thunderbolt 4 specifically — the guaranteed PCIe bandwidth matters.

Cable length matters

Both Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 face the same physics limitations as data rates increase:

  • 40 Gbps passive: ~2 meters maximum

  • 40 Gbps active: Longer (5+ meters), more expensive cables with built-in chips

  • 20 Gbps passive: ~1 meter for some lower-quality cables

For longer Thunderbolt connections, "active optical" Thunderbolt cables use fiber optic strands and can reach 50+ meters at full speed. These are expensive but solve long-distance Thunderbolt requirements in offices and studios.

Bottom line

For most buyers in 2026, Thunderbolt 4 is the safer bet if you can afford it — you get guaranteed performance across all use cases. USB4 is fine for less demanding applications and budget-conscious purchases, but you need to read the specs carefully to know what you're getting.
