USB Cable Types Explained: USB-A, USB-B, USB-C, Micro, and Mini

USB cables are everywhere — charging phones, connecting printers, syncing data, powering devices. But with at least five different connector shapes and three generations of USB speeds, picking the right cable can be surprisingly confusing. Here's a clear breakdown of every USB cable type you'll encounter.

USB connector shapes

The letter after "USB" tells you the physical shape of the connector. The number (2.0, 3.0, 3.1) tells you the speed. These are two separate things, and understanding both helps you buy the right cable every time.

USB Type-A is the flat rectangular connector you've been plugging into computers since the late 1990s. It's the most common USB connector in existence. You'll find USB-A ports on laptops, desktops, TVs, game consoles, routers, and car dashboards. One end of most USB cables is a Type-A plug.

The connector only fits one way — if it doesn't go in, flip it 180 degrees. (USB-C solved this annoyance.) USB-A ports come in both USB 2.0 (black interior) and USB 3.0 (blue interior) versions.

USB Type-B is the square-ish connector with beveled top corners. You'll find it on larger peripheral devices: printers, scanners, external hard drive docks, audio interfaces, and some monitors. A typical USB-A to USB-B cable connects your computer to your printer.

Type-B is less common today than it was a decade ago, but it's still the standard connector for most desktop printers from HP, Canon, Brother, and Epson. If you just bought a printer and it didn't come with a cable (most don't anymore), you need a USB-A to USB-B cable.

USB Type-C is the small, oval, reversible connector that's rapidly becoming the universal standard. It plugs in either way — no more fumbling. USB-C is found on modern laptops, phones, tablets, Nintendo Switch, newer monitors, and increasingly on peripherals.

USB-C is more than just a shape. It can carry USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2, and USB4 speeds depending on the cable and devices. It can also carry video signals (DisplayPort Alt Mode), deliver up to 240 watts of power (USB Power Delivery), and replace almost every other connector type. Not all USB-C cables are equal — a USB-C cable rated for USB 2.0 won't deliver USB 3.1 speeds even if the connector fits.

Micro USB (Micro-B) is the small trapezoidal connector that was the standard charging port on Android phones, Bluetooth speakers, e-readers, and budget electronics for over a decade. It's being replaced by USB-C on new devices, but billions of Micro USB devices are still in use. If you have an older Kindle, a Bluetooth headset, or a PS4 controller, you need Micro USB cables.

Mini USB (Mini-B) is the medium-sized connector that preceded Micro USB. You'll find it on older digital cameras, GPS units, older external hard drives, and some older game controllers. Mini USB is mostly a legacy connector now, but you still need it for certain devices.

USB speed generations

USB 2.0 transfers data at up to 480 Mbps (megabits per second). This is perfectly adequate for keyboards, mice, printers, and basic file transfers. Most USB-A to USB-B printer cables are USB 2.0, and that's fine — your printer doesn't need more.

USB 3.0 (also called USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.2 Gen 1) runs at up to 5 Gbps — roughly 10 times faster than USB 2.0. This matters for external hard drives, SSDs, and high-resolution webcams. USB 3.0 ports are typically identified by their blue interior. USB 3.0 cables work in USB 2.0 ports (at 2.0 speeds) and vice versa.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB 3.2 Gen 2) doubles the speed to 10 Gbps. You'll find this on newer external SSDs and docking stations.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 reaches 20 Gbps using two lanes. USB-C only.

USB4 pushes to 40 Gbps (and USB4 Version 2.0 reaches 80 Gbps). USB-C only, and typically on Thunderbolt 4 compatible ports.

Which cable do you need?

Connecting a printer: USB-A to USB-B, USB 2.0 is fine. Lengths from 3 to 15 feet are common.

Charging a phone or tablet: If it's a newer device, USB-A to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C. Older Android phones use USB-A to Micro USB.

External hard drive or SSD: USB-A to USB 3.0 Micro-B (the wider Micro connector with an extra section) for older drives. USB-C for newer portable SSDs.

Extending a USB connection: USB-A male to USB-A female extension cable. Available in USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 versions.

Connecting a camera, GPS, or older device: USB-A to Mini USB.

Cable length and signal quality

USB 2.0 cables can reliably run up to about 16 feet (5 meters). USB 3.0 cables should generally stay under 10 feet (3 meters) for reliable performance at full speed. Longer runs may work but can cause intermittent disconnections or speed drops.

For longer distances, use a powered USB hub or an active USB extension cable with a built-in signal booster.
